Fall 2023 Summary - Abington Heights Athletics

 

It has certainly been an exciting Fall 2023 season here at Abington Heights! We’d like to recap this amazing season and all the accomplishments our teams have achieved:

 

Fall 2023 record:

 

Boys Cross Country finished 17-6, with Sean Rooney earning a medal and securing 4th place out of 8 teams in Class 3A.

 

Girls Cross Country completed their second straight undefeated season in league competition at 23-0, while also repeating as league and district champions. Emma Horsley claimed the individual championship in District 2 Class 3A. All our girls, including Emma Horsley, Anna Pucilowski, Reese Morgan, Morgan Kresge, Hailey Hirtz, Marley Gilboy, and Kiera Crowell, qualified for the state race. The girls impressively secured second place in Class 3A at the state meet, accumulating 127 team points. The runner-up trophy is now proudly displayed in the front trophy case at AHHS. Hailey Hirtz will be continuing her running career at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

 

Boys Golf wrapped up an undefeated regular season at 14-0, clinching their second-straight and 27th overall league title, and 12th district title. In the individual district tournament, Senior Alec Hamilton emerged as the Class 3A champion, with junior Cade Kelleher as the runner-up. The team also won the District 2-4 subregional state qualifier, advancing to the team state championships where they placed 5th.

 

Girls Golf finished the regular season with a 6-5 overall record. Both Rose and Kate Peters qualified for the PIAA District 2 Class 3A playoffs, with Rose Peters securing 2nd place overall at the Scott's Greens Classic on September 9th.

 

Field Hockey ended the season 17-2-1 as district semifinalists, winning their second straight and third overall league title. Athletes choosing to continue their academic and field hockey careers in college include Madison Zalewski to Division I Old Dominion University, Peyton Pallman to Division I Central Michigan University, and Kaylin Elliot to Division 2 Kutztown University.

 

Football ended the regular season 7-5, where the team finished as District 2 Class 5A Runners-Up. The team achieved its longest win streak (four-straight) since 2013, and had its first playoff victory in seven years. Mason Fedor was nominated for the MaxPreps Pennsylvania Athlete of the Week.

 

Boys Soccer finished the season 17-3, securing their second straight and 18th overall league and 19th district title. Kohen Stiles earned Times-Tribune Athlete of the Week and LIAA Division I MVP. Nico Bustos, Sam Specht, and Luke Kozar earned Lackawanna League 1st Team all-stars, while Justin Kim and Michael Maldonado were second-team all-stars. Kohen Stiles was also recently named to the all-state team.

 

Girls Soccer completed the regular season undefeated at 23-1, winning their first district title in 11 years (8th overall) and securing their second-straight league title (8th total). The team made history by reaching the Class 3A state championship, falling short 3-1 against Moon Area and earning the runner-up trophy. Several players achieved milestones during the regular season, with senior Maggie Ratchford and Alyssa Steenback earning their 100th career points on 10/31. Steenback also achieved her 25th assist, breaking the school record on the same day. Sophomore Lilia Calvert scored her 50th career goal on 10/9, leading the team to 64 goals this season. Senior Lindsey Tasker had an outstanding 62 saves and 9 clean sheets. Post-graduation, Maggie Ratchford will play for Division I Saint Francis University, Madeline Davies and Alyssa Steenback for Misericordia University, and Claire Shoemaker for Ursinsis College. The runner-up trophy is proudly displayed in the front trophy case at AHHS. According to MaxPreps, sophomore Lilia Calvert currently leads the nation in most goals scored this season at 65, and is second nationally in points scored at 151. She has also been named to the all-state team.

 

Girls Tennis closed the season with a 17-2 overall record, capturing its sixth straight and 26th team district title. The team secured the No. 1 seed entering the district tournament, and in the district singles tournament, Susan Arp claimed her second straight and the team's sixth consecutive singles title. Sona Honumali and Mary Booth also clinched the doubles district title.

 

Girls Volleyball finished 14-8 overall, qualifying for the district tournament and winning their first round at home against Dallas, though falling short in the semifinals. Among achievements earned this season are junior Sadie O’Brien’s 100th kill and sophomore Veda Dickinson’s 100th kill.
